Palo Santo (Bursera Graveolens) is part of the citrus family, related to Frankincense and has sweet notes of pine, mint and lemon. Traditional use includes burning for ceremonial purposes and insect repellent (I am always burning a stick when we are enjoying a sunny day on the deck, or if I am gardening) It is said that burning Palo Santo welcomes in good energy and dispels negative energy, creating a sense of peace.

Palo Santo is NOT endangered. In December 2019, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) published for the first time a review of the conservation status of Bursera graveolens and declared it "of lesser concern. What is endangered is the Bulnesia sarmientoi, a different tree and not what these sticks are made from. So fear not, these are safe to burn, guilt free.

Here’s an easy way to tell the two types of Palo Santo apart: Palo Santo from the threatened Bulnesia sarmientoi tree is dark and reddish, akin to mahogany. Palo Santo from sustainably harvested Bursera graveolens, such as the ones I have listed, is yellowish-tan, similar to pine, and sometimes streaked with darker shades of grey or brown.

Easy to use, simply light the end and let burn for a few seconds, then blow out the flame and let the smoke do the work (make sure you rest it in a nonflammable dish. Palo Santo can be used for:

  • Deodorizing and sanitizing the air
  • Starting our meditation practice, yoga or a creative endeavour
  • Uplifting your mood
  • Repelling mosquitos, gnats and other insects
  • Calming stress and anxiety

Sustainably harvested from fallen wood that has naturally cured on the forest floor for 4-10 years offering a high quality Palo Santo experience.
